Sparwood works together to dig out

By Marija Goetting

Power outages, stranded people and powerful wind gusts were just some of the reported consequences of Friday night’s snowstorm.

The Elk Valley was hit with one of the nasty first storms of the year. The most visible damage in Sparwood was the trees along Highway 43 just before the Heights turn-off. They could hardly stand from the freezing temperatures and the heavy weight of the snow falling.

Reports of 19-22 inches fell within a 12 hour period. The wind gust of up to 70 km/h was just the last straw. It looks like at least a hundred trees were ripped from their roots and tossed.

Some people thought someone had logged the area but the snow-covered roots tell a different story.

On the bright side, the citizens of Sparwood really came together the next morning and you could see everyone shoveling, or snowblowing, not only their own homes but their neighbor’s as well.Sparwood poststorm
