Fernie Netball League begins

The last week of January saw the Fernie Netball League reestablished after a three-year hiatus.

Emma Polit, who previously ran the league had a break for maternity when her second daughter was born and when she had to return to Australia for some months. However, the Fernie Peaks Competitive Team and the League are now well and truly back on the map.

The Fernie Peaks started regular practice in September 2015 and went to Calgary in November to try their hand at a few games with some more well established teams. A few original members were also joined by Emily Park and Rachel Cline (who have only been in Fernie for a couple of years but bring their knowledge of the game from the UK), plus some Canadian locals keep to get to know the most popular female sport in many commonwealth countries.

The Fernie Peaks wanted to go for the chance of some match play, as there were not enough local players to really have a good competitive game against, but they did not rate their chances of a win. They had a couple of team player with injuries, a pregnant player and several Canadians who had only played in practice games a handful of times.

Amazingly the ‘small town’ Fernie team went on to win the B division of the tournament. They won each of the seven games they played some with resounding scores of 25-5 and were only really challenged in one game.

The Calgary and Edmonton teams were shocked at their defeat at the hands of this inexperienced, un-ranked team. The organizers asked the Fernie team to return to the Spring Competition but only if they entered the A league!

The Fernie social league is made up of four teams, but there is room for additional teams or floating players who want to sub for a team.

They play on Sunday nights at Max Turyk gym, in the Airport, 6-7 p.m. If you are interested you can contact Emily Park at [email protected]

In spring they hope to have enough new interest to be able to enter an A and B team for the Calgary competition, and who knows they may with both divisions! Now that would be something!
