One vote abdicates local governance: Wildsight

Wildsight has expressed its dismay over the Regional District of East Kootenay board of directors’ narrow dismissal of a motion last week to rescind a 2009 regional resolution that handed the Jumbo Glacier Resort Ltd. project land use planning to the province.

The board voted eight to seven June 8 to defeat a motion made by Electoral Area G director Gerry Wilkie to rescind Resolution 40854 (2009).

“The people of the East Kootenay have never had the opportunity for a public consultation on the Jumbo Glacier Resort despite polling that consistently shows overwhelming opposition to the project,” stated Wildsight program manager Robyn Duncan. “The regional district board, by a one vote majority, has abdicated both the land-use and governance decision to the provincial government. This shows an unfortunate disregard of Kootenay residents. The recent passing of Bill 41 has opened the door for the province to designate a Resort Municipality with an appointed mayor and council. Such a move would undermine both community concerns and the democratic process,” she said.
