Notes from City Hall

Brownbag Lunch with Mayor McCormick

On Wednesday, December 13, and on the second Wednesday of each month, Mayor Don McCormick will host a brown-bag luncheon at City Hall from noon until 1:30 p.m. Bring your own lunch and have a discussion with the Mayor.

Reminder to renew your 2018 Dog Licences!

As we approach the New Year, we would like to remind all residents with furry friends to please renew your dog licenses. Place the license on the dog’s collar and ensure the collar is on at all times, as this helps enable a speedy return of your beloved pet if it gets loose. The rules of dog ownership are outlined in the City’s Animal Control Bylaw, and the fees are outlined in ‘Schedule A’ of the bylaw. You can view this bylaw on our website.

Snow Removal

Each winter the Operations Department has the responsibility of maintaining approximately 100 kms of paved and gravel streets, including lanes, within the City of Kimberley. We endeavour to accomplish this task in the most cost effective manner possible while still maintaining a high level of service and safety to the public.

Please remember that snow and ice control is not a substitute for caution and defensive driving practices when operating a vehicle under winter conditions, and ensure that your vehicle has proper winter tires.

Sanding and plowing priorities are based on volumes of traffic and steepness of terrain. City streets are generally categorized into three groups:

  • Main streets and emergency access routes with hills.
  • Other main or collector streets.
  • Local and residential streets.

The main streets and hills are completed first. This ensures that traffic can access such facilities as the schools, special care facilities, the central business area, and the ski hill area. Next completed are collector streets, which may not have steep terrain but do have heavy volumes of traffic and include Rotary Drive, Knighton Road, and Jim Ogilvie Way. Residential streets are then attended to. During weekends and statutory holidays, the city generally services only the high priority streets.

For more information and a list of frequently asked questions please refer to the city’s website, Snow Removal and FAQs section or call the Operations Department at 250-427-9660.

Wood Burning Appliances

For those using wood burning appliances to heat their homes this fall and winter, the city asks that you familiarize yourself with our Wood Burning Appliance Emissions Control Bylaw. Please visit our website for more information.

Free Public Swim

Come to the Aquatic Centre and enjoy a Free Public Swim on Wednesday, December 6 from 5 to 6 p.m., sponsored by Meadowbrook Motors.
