Wildfire burning northeast of Canal Flats

Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains for southern portion of East Kootenay

The thunderstorms that rolled through the East Kootenay yesterday afternoon and evening produced one wildfire.

Wildfire BC reports there is a lightning-caused seven hectare fire in the Jack Creek area, about 30 km northeast of Canal Flats and 18 km north of Whiteswan Provincial Park.

Meanwhile, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued by Environment Canada yesterday was re-upped this morning for the Cranbrook/Kimberley and Elk Valley areas of the East Kootenay.

There is no watch for the Columbia Valley or Kootenay National Park, though there is a 70% chance of showers or thunderstorms near noon.

Conditions are favourable in the rest of the region for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain.

“The air mass remains moist and unstable over the BC Interior today. Slow moving thunderstorms that develop this afternoon has the potential to give isolated rainfall amounts of 15 to 25 mm within one hour,” Environment Canada reported.

Hail is also possible. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
