Gaming grant review coming to Cranbrook

The City of Cranbrook will be the lone East Kootenay stop on a provincial community gaming grant review tour currently underway.

The review is stopping in 14 B.C. communities between August and September to gather input from individuals and non-profit organizations on the allocation of funding through Community Gaming Grants.

The review was launched earlier this summer by Premier Christy Clark in order to get a good gauge of the grant program, which provides funding to non-profit groups based on revenue collected from gambling in the province.

On July 11, Skip Triplett was appointed to lead the review and he will be at Cranbrook’s Prestige Inn on August 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to hear comments and concerns.

According to www.communitygaminggrantreview.gov.bc.ca/, the review wants to accommodate individuals, community groups and non-profit organizations who wish to attend these Community Forums and present their views. However, due to expected large turnouts at the forums, the public is being encouraged to register [ ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM ] to let them know in advance you’ll be there.

* Community Gaming Grants currently help support the delivery of programs and services in the following sectors:

o Human and social services.

o Public safety.

o Youth arts and culture.

o Fairs, festivals and museums.

o Parent advisory councils.

o Sports for youth and people with disabilities.

* Gaming generates more than $1 billion in revenue per year for the B.C.

government.

* In 2010-11, $135 million in Community Gaming Grants – a 12.5 per cent increase over the previous year – was distributed to approximately 6,000 non-profit and charitable organizations in B.C.

* Community Gaming Grant Review forums are being held in the North,

Interior, Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland in August and

September.
