Violent break and enter suspect in custody

A break and enter suspect is in custody after an incident in Kimberley early Sunday morning.

The subject entered a home looking for money, when confronted by the homeowner he grabbed a knife and fled after a short altercation. A police dog tracked the suspect to his residence where he was arrested.

Kimberley RCMP received the call on Dec. 16, at 3:15 a.m.

“The homeowners heard noises and upon checking saw a subject inside their house and confronted him. He claimed to be broke and was looking for money and tried to flee. Initially the male tried to exit the house. When he couldn’t get out he grabbed a kitchen knife. The homeowner was able to take the knife away from him at which time the suspect punched the homeowner,” reported Sgt. Chris Newel, Kimberley RCMP Detachment commander.

The suspect fled, but from the description provided, police had a good idea as to his identity. A police dog attended and obtained a track from the location of the break and enter to the suspect’s residence. He was soon arrested and taken into custody.

He went before a Judicial Justice of the Peace by way of a teleconference later in the day. He has been charged with Break and Enter and Assault Causing Bodily Harm. The subject is on probation with numerous conditions. Police will be providing further evidence to support Breach of Probation charges.

The subject was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on Dec 19 in Cranbrook.

“There was an excellent combined response by Kimberley and Cranbrook General Duty members with assistance from the Police Dog Service and the Crime Reduction Unit,” Sgt. Newel said.
