Mountainfilm adds local touch and student outreach

Mountainfilm on Tour Invermere has added a local touch to the Feb. 8 and 9 festival.

Starring two Columbia Valley residents, Children of the Columbia has been added to both the Friday and Saturday night screenings.

Join Invermere’s Christina Lustenberger and Dane Tudor, two big mountain skiers who grew up on the shores of the Columbia, as they travel up the waterway that crafted them. From Red Mountain through to Kinbasket Lake, Dane and Lusti move northwards through a profoundly unique mountain culture. One distinctly tied to the land on a massive scale.

The festival will also feature Mountainfilm for Students.

Mountainfilm on Tour’s education program introduces students in K-12 public schools to essential environmental, cultural and social issues with age-appropriate film programs put together by a Mountainfilm staff member. They currently reach over 20,000 students each year.

There will be two screenings, both at David Thompson Secondary School for valley students only.

  • 10:15 a.m. – Grades 4 to 7; with students from JA Laird, Windermere, Edgewater and Martin Morigeau [Canal Flats].
  •  11:25 a.m. – Grades 8 to 12; with students from DTSS.

Films in these playlists include education materials developed by teachers to align with national standards. These educational materials can be downloaded and include filmmaker interviews, discussion questions, resources, activities and more aimed at engaging students and instructors in dialogue and in-depth exploration of identified topics.
