Columbia Valley RCMP Report

By Sgt. Darren Kakuno

This past week, April 22 through April 28 the Columbia Valley RCMP responded to 39
calls for service. The following are some of the more notable files our officers responded
to.

Unsafe passer dealt with

On April 22, at 10:30 a.m. police received a report of a burgundy Jeep passing unsafely
on Highway 93/95 near Invermere. An officer located the Jeep parked at a retail store in
Invermere and warned the driver about his driving.

Roof climbers captured on video

On April 22,  Valley Foods in Invermere discovered their video surveillance system
captured three youth climbing onto their roof on the evening of April 20. In doing so, the
youth damaged a rubber membrane on the roof. Anyone with any information is asked
to contact the Columbia Valley RCMP.

Disturbance call leads to arrest

On April 24, police attended a residence on Highway 93/95 in Windermere for a
disturbance. Upon arrival the officers learned two individuals, both of whom had been
drinking, got into a verbal argument. One of the individuals was arrested for breach of
peace and mischief and held in cells until he was sober.

Suspicious vehicle checked

On April 26, police received several reports of a brown pickup that had been parked on
Westside Road in Invermere for several days. Police spoke to the owner of the pickup
who confirmed he was fine but was having mechanical problems and could not start the
truck. Police did not tow the vehicle as it was parked legally and not obstructing traffic.

90-day driving prohibition

On April 26, at about 8:45 p.m., RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver in a
black Ford F150 in Invermere. An officer located and stopped the pickup as it was
leaving an Invermere liquor store. The officer noted the driver was the same individual
he had spoken with earlier in the evening at an unrelated incident and warned not to
drive due to his level of intoxication. The driver complied with a roadside screening
demand and failed two breath samples. The driver received a 90-day driving prohibition
and his vehicle was impounded for 30-days.

Suspicious pair draws patrol

On the evening of April 26,  police received a report of two suspicious males wondering
around the parking lot of Big Horn Meadows Resort in Radium Hot Springs. Both males
were described as having blonde hair. One was wearing a red sweater and the other
was wearing a green sweater. Police conducted patrols in the area but were not able to
locate the individuals. Police would like to remind residents to ensure their vehicles and
property are locked and all valuables removed from view.

Vehicle broken into

On April 27 a resident on Columbia Avenue in Radium Hot Springs reported someone
had gone through her Nissan Frontier sometime between midnight and 7 a.m. Taken
from the vehicle was a handful of change and a debit card.

Vehicle stolen from Radium

On April 27,  a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pickup was stolen from Rivercrest Road in
Radium Hot Springs. The vehicle was located later in the day in Castle Junction,
Alberta. Police continue to investigate.

Wallet stolen

On April 28, a resident of Ledgerock Ridge in Invermere reported that at some point on
April 26, his wallet was stolen from his garage which had been left opened.

Property crime in our valley typically increases during the warmer months. Many thefts
are crimes of opportunity. Please remember to lock your vehicles and homes to prevent
becoming a victim of property crime.
