Bike to School Week in Cranbrook
Spring is here and Cranbrook kids are climbing back onto their bicycle saddles.
To celebrate cycling season we are excited to announce that Cranbrook elementary schools are teaming up with the RCMP and the Rotary We-Bike Cycling Program to coordinate the first annual “Bike to School Challenge.”
The challenge will run during Bike to School Week from May 27 to 30.
Students throughout Cranbrook are encouraged to ride their bicycles to get to and from school.
Bike to School Week is sponsored in part by BCAA. Bike to School Week is a free and fun celebration of biking to school. This event is a chance for Schools throughout British Columbia to encourage and celebrate students and their families cycling to School.
Riding to school builds physical activity into kids’ daily routine, supports in-class concentration, and provides a foundation for healthy lifestyles and a life-long love of cycling. By riding their bikes, students arrive fresh and energized at school and it reduces traffic in and around the school’s neighbourhood. Less traffic means more safety for cyclists. More safety means more joy. More joy means natural behavioural change towards a sustainable future. Riding bikes is fun and it helps the environment!
“Go by bike week is an amazing way to continue to build eco friendly lifestyle choices into our daily commutes. We would love to see the population of school aged kids grow in numbers for this event,” said Jackie Galvin, Cranbrook Coordinator of Bike to Work/School Week.
There are prizes for the top school and the top class. Local sponsors include Dairy Queen, Boston Pizza, Starbucks and the Sunrise Rotary Club of Cranbrook.
“Our Sunrise Rotary Club, through the We-Bike Cycling Program, is thrilled to be partnering in the 2019 Bike to School Week Challenge! We look forward to seeing the bike racks full everyday at every school,” said Janice Sommerfeld, President of Sunrise Rotary Club of Cranbrook.
A Team Leader from each school is asked to register their students and school at www.BiketoWork.ca/bike- to-school. Also, for the local Cranbrook contest, school staff will do a daily count of their student bike riders.
The week’s tally will be calculated and the school with the highest percentage of riders (# riders/school population) will be declared the Cranbrook Elementary Schools 2019 Bike to School Week Challenge winner.
Cranbrook RCMP is also teaming up to help make Bike to School Week a fun and safe adventure for Cranbrook’s young student cyclists.
