College ready for new school year

College of the Rockies is ready to welcome more than 2,000 new and returning students to all seven campuses on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Tuesday is set aside for students to orient themselves, get a locker, meet their classmates, get their student ID cards, buy textbooks and have some fun. Day and evening classes will start on Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Members of the 2010/11 women’s Avalanche Volleyball team staffed the prize table during last year’s Orientation Day: left to right, Becca Christensen, Rylee Newlove, Erica Shouldice and Paige Fredrickson.

At the Cranbrook Campus, Manager of Campus Life and Athletics Cori Andrichuk noted, “We have a number of activities planned for students following the Opening Ceremony and announcements in the gym at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. These include free time on the climbing wall, information tables, a variety of games and a barbecue lunch for staff and students.

“Welcome Week continues right through until Sunday,” Andrichuk continued. “There are many activities scheduled including free ice cream, a staff/student volleyball mixer, pins ‘n pizza laser bowling and river rafting.

Executive Director of Communications and Marketing, Donna Kraus-Hagerman added, “Our students primarily come from the East Kootenay region, however, we also attract learners from all across Canada and around the world. We actively recruit students by promoting the East Kootenay lifestyle, our friendly communities, our lower tuition and smaller class sizes, the excellent staff and faculty at all our campuses and the wide variety of programs we offer.

“Our faculty is very qualified and this is recognized across the province. Our support staff is knowledgeable, helpful and truly professional in every way. We are extremely fortunate to have such dedicated faculty and staff whose sole purpose is to help students succeed. And this all starts right from Day 1, Tuesday, Sept. 6,” Kraus-Hagerman concluded.
