Electoral Area A 2026 Volunteer of the Year recognized
Linda Hunter has been recognized as the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area A Volunteer of the Year in honour of her impactful service to the community.
“Linda’s volunteer contributions have touched many parts of community life, including recreation, health and wellness, community safety, and local leadership,” said Electoral Area A Director Thomas McDonald.
“Over many years, she has consistently stepped forward to support residents and help strengthen the Fernie area.”
Hunter was one of the founders of the Fernie Freestyle Ski Club, which has grown into one of the largest and most active freestyle clubs in Western Canada. Her early efforts helped create opportunities for young athletes and contributed to the success of provincial- and world-level freestyle events in the region.
She has also volunteered with the Red Cross as a representative at Elk Valley Hospital, helping dispense care aids to Elk Valley residents.
Through Cycling Without Age, Hunter has served as a pilot, taking local seniors and others on special rides through Fernie and creating opportunities for connection, joy, and inclusion.
As a Trail Ambassador with the Fernie Nordic Society, Hunter helps welcome and support trail users both on the trails and at the hut. She has also served the community as a FireSmart Champion, helping neighbours reduce wildfire risk and improving preparedness in an area where that work is especially important.
Hunter’s leadership with the Fernie Snow Valley Community Association has been especially significant. She has served on the board for seven years, including four years as president, representing approximately 1,500 homeowners and residents.
In that role, she has worked tirelessly to help navigate complex development issues, advocate for community interests, and support growth that aligns with the community’s long-term needs and vision.
The Electoral Area A Volunteer of the Year award recognizes those who have had a meaningful impact on their community. She was recognized at the Area A information meeting Tuesday night in Hosmer.
