RCMP shooting incident to be investigated by IIO

A non-fatal shooting incident yesterday near Cranbrook  (Oct. 2), between a Cranbrook-based RCMP officer and carjacking suspects will be the focus of an Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) investigation.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) on Tuesday, October 2, the Cranbrook RCMP member attempted to stop a suspected stolen vehicle near Yahk that was involved in a carjacking earlier in the day in the Creston area.

According to a RCMP press release, later during the incident (near Cranbrook) the officer discharged his service pistol. Two suspects were taken into custody; the male suspect was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A female suspect remains in police custody. The officer was not injured.

The scene has been secured in anticipation of the IIO arrival.

The IIO has confirmed that investigators have been deployed to Cranbrook in response to an officer involved shooting that took place on Oct. 2.

Six IIO personnel were deployed by air at 7 a.m. this morning (Oct. 3) and were expected to arrive in Cranbrook at 10 a.m. Once there, they will meet with the designated RCMP liaison officer and assume control of the scene. It is expected that the RCMP will continue to conduct their investigation into the earlier events.

The IIO and the involved police service will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.’s police services in July, 2012. The MOU provides for circumstances where there are concurrent investigations underway.

As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO’s goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.
