Hunting is not a right, it is a privilege

Letter to the Editor

Recently there has been some complaining about predators, particularly wolves, who are accused of depleting deer and other ungulates.  I take issue with this.

The province is now planning a wolf kill, which is very troubling.  It will not help the problem because wolves are not the primary problem — people are.

I am very senior now, but I hunted for much of my life.  I never hunted on a quad, in a vehicle, or on a road — I always hiked into the backcountry, and packed out my kill, which fed my family.

The way to increase our wildlife is to reduce or restrict the issuance of hunting licenses.

It grieves me when I read about a proud parent bragging that their 12-year-old child has shot their first deer.

Wolves have to eat and they eat deer, elk, moose, sheep and so on.  It is their natural food.

People have to eat and can go to the grocery store or meat market to purchase their meat.  They would be contributing to the economy and helping the farmers and ranchers.

Wolves are not the biggest predator of our wildlife:  the biggest predator is us, too often for fun and ego.

Hunting is not a right, it is a privilege.
