Rescue a success due to preparation reports ESAR
Elkford Search and Rescue (ESAR) loves happy endings!
Yesterday evening (Feb. 12) ESAR was tasked to assist some individuals up the Elk Lakes Road. All individuals were successfully reached and brought back into town with no injuries, ESAR reported on social media.
“These individuals left a trip plan, had extra gear and knew when to call for help. This is a reminder to do what these individuals did!”
When you head out into the mountains these are some tips that ESAR would like you to remember.
– ALWAYS have a means of communication (we love satellite communication devices).
– Don’t rely on technology for directions, go “old school” and bring out a trusty paper map with a compass.
– Leave a trip plan with a trustworthy individual and give them a time that you plan to be home at. Make sure you stick to your trip plan; this makes our job a lot easier to find you!
– Become familiar with your equipment and ensure that you know how to use it.
– Bring extra gear (extra food / water one litre per person, extra clothing, spare batteries, fire making kit and first aid kit).
– Travel with a buddy!
“Remember that weather in the mountains can change quickly. You want to make sure that you are prepared for the worst. It may be sunny and warm when you leave Elkford but when you hit your destination the weather could have changed,” ESAR advises.
Like always, if you need ESAR – they are a quick 911 call away!
