Tembec planer mill blaze investigation complete

The Nov. 1 evening blaze destroyed Tembec's planer mill.

The investigation by Cranbrook Fire & Emergency Services into Thursday night’s fire (Nov. 1) at the Tembec planer mill wrapped up Friday afternoon (Nov. 2) and investigators indicate that the cause is undetermined and deem the fire as not suspicious in nature.

The Tembec planer mill facility has been closed and unused for several months. Neither the kiln nor the finger joint plant on the property was involved in the fire. The property has now been turned back over to Tembec.

The company will be working to secure the site and begin clean up. There were no injuries and no damage estimate is available.

The planer mill facility was completely destroyed. At approximately 9:55 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, Cranbrook Fire and Emergency Services were called to a fire at the Tembec planer mill, located just off Theatre Road in Cranbrook.

In all 18 fire fighters, two engines and the ladder truck responded to the call and found the facility engulfed. Responders created a perimeter and began fighting the blaze. Fire crews were also able to successfully move and save several pieces of heavy equipment away from the site. Fire crews remained on scene throughout the night watching for flair ups and dousing hot spots.
