Sparwood Council Facts
The following is a synopsis of what occurred during the Nov. 21 District of Sparwood council meeting.
BYLAWS
Water Use Amendment Bylaws
The Utility and Solid Waste Management Amendment Bylaw and Delegation Amendment Bylaw were adopted at the November 21 meeting. These amendments will provide a means of regulating heavy water use, the means to respond to drought conditions, and to propose delegation for high demand water permitting.
BUSINESS
Development Variance Permit for 127 Centennial Square
Heli Cold HVAC Ltd. has applied for a Development Variance Permit to decrease the number of off-street parking spaces required by Schedule “A” of the Off-street Parking and Loading Bylaw No. 495, 1988 as amended. Council directed staff to proceed with notifying affected properties of its’ intent to consider this development variance permit at a future informal public hearing.
2024 Funding Requests – Category 1 Grant Allocations
Council reviewed the Category 1 Funding Support applications and approved the following:
Fernie Women’s Resource Centre – $2,499; Youth Action Sparwood – $3,060; Sparwood Search & Rescue – $1,500; Sparwood Golf Course- $30,000 + $15,000; Sparwood and District Art and Heritage Council – $3,302; Sparwood Trails Alliance – $10,000; Michel Natal Sparwood Heritage Society – $49,980 + $6,000; Visitor Information Centre – $64,822 + $8,000; Sparwood Public Library – $206,738 + $10,000 + $6,000; WildSafe BC – $2,000.
Council also approved the following new Category 1 funding requests for inclusion in the District of Sparwood 2024 operating budget:
- $10,000 for the Michel Natal Sparwood Heritage Society for a new, permanent part time position;
- $1,698 for the Sparwood District Arts & Heritage Council for new events for Sparwood; and
- $1,000 for BC WildSafe for WildSafe program delivery.
DELEGATION
Jackie Carpenter and Donna Leskosek addressed council on inclusive housing. They requested when council sells land for housing to consider dedicating 10% of large developments to housing for lowering income.
