From November 21- Dec. 7 is the Purple Light Campaign that brings awareness of domestic abuse to the forefront in many communities and the Columbia Valley RCMP Detachment is taking part in it this year.

“The detachment, unfortunately, responds to a number of such calls. In many instances the anger that is displayed is often fueled by alcohol and drugs. Mix this with children involved in the house it becomes much more tragic,” stated detachment commander S/Sgt. Marko Shehovac.

The detachment has engaged with numerous partners in the community to provide not only education and assistance to both parties but also to become more active in assisting victims of domestic violence.

The ‘Purple Light Campaign’ is one of those initiatives taken on by concerned citizens to bring this to the attention of the community that domestic violence has no place in our community.

“You will observe purple lights throughout the community.  The detachment members and our community partners will continue to work and assist all involved in domestic violence. As community members you can show your support by contributing to the Purple Light Campaign when volunteers come around and also an opportunity to attend a candle light vigil on December 6 at 4:45 p.m. at the cenotaph.  Your attendance to recognize and support those in the community that are active in this cause will be appreciated,” reported Shehovac, adding, “It is also an opportunity to see my new hair style!”

Taking part in Movember with other members of the detachment, Shehovac has promised to streak whatever hair he has “left” if the Mounties reach their fundraising goal of $2,000.
