Survey reveals concerns over Lake Windermere carrying capacity
The Lake Windermere Ambassadors (LWA) have released a comprehensive report analyzing the community’s feedback on recreational use and its impacts on Lake Windermere. This survey was conducted as part of a larger two-year project, study findings to follow.
The survey, conducted between August 31 and October 1, 2023, gathered responses from 222 participants, shedding light on residents’ and visitors’ views on lake recreation, safety, and environmental concerns.
Key findings:
- Demographics: A majority (71%) of the respondents identified as full-time residents, while 27% were part-time residents, and two per cent were visitors.
- Recreational Activities: The survey revealed a strong preference for non-motorized activities, with swimming (85%) and paddling/SUP (80%) being the most popular. Activities like fishing and boating also featured prominently, but to a lesser extent.
- Boat Density and Safety: A significant 77% of respondents believe there should be a maximum number of boats allowed on the lake at any one time. Safety concerns were highlighted by 56% of respondents who feel the lake is already over capacity, with many reporting issues with aggressive boating and wake impacts.
- Environmental Concerns: The community expressed considerable concern over the ecological health of the lake. Key issues include shoreline erosion (68 mentions), water quality (including drinking water safety), and the impact of large boat waves on the ecological values of the lake.
- Support for Regulations: While there is strong support for new bylaws to regulate boat activities, respondents emphasized the need for effective enforcement. About 87% would adhere to voluntary codes of conduct to protect the lake’s sensitive areas and water quality.
“The feedback from our community is crucial in guiding our efforts to balance recreational use with the preservation of Lake Windermere’s ecological health,” stated Lake Windermere Ambassadors in a media release.
“The high response rate and detailed input highlight the community’s vested interest in maintaining the lake as a safe and sustainable resource.”
Next steps:
The Lake Windermere Ambassadors plan to use this data to advise the community and visitors on responsible boating practices and engage with local authorities and stakeholders to develop practical strategies for managing recreational activities on the lake. This includes at least considering the implementation of bylaws and enhanced enforcement mechanisms to ensure a balanced approach that considers both the enjoyment of the lake and its long-term health.
