Temporary mobile CT scanner at EKRH

A new mobile computed tomography (CT) unit is stationed at East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH) to provide uninterrupted patient care while the current CT scanner and medical imaging department undergoes a significant renovation and a new, state-of-the art CT scanner is installed.

Renovations begin Monday, March 3, and the mobile CT unit will be in full operation.

The CT Scanner renovation project for EKRH was approved in 2024 and is valued at more than $3 million, with the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District contributing $1.2 million towards the project.

Enhancements to the medical imaging department include a new Siemens X.ceed CT scanner, new flooring, new medical-grade ceiling tiles and a new lead-lined door. Additional equipment includes updated cooling/power systems, a ceiling mounted patient lift, hand hygiene sink, eyewash station and a drench hose station.

“The new Siemens X.ceed offers advanced imaging capabilities, shorter exam times, and reduced radiation exposure,” said Sean Hart, Interior Health project manager for the East Kootenay. “This will lead to improved patient outcomes and a more efficient workflow.”

The mobile CT unit is one of two new mobile medical imaging units now in use in the province. Each unit has a home base in the Lower Mainland and are available to support hospital capacity during renovations, replacements, or upgrades. The other unit houses a magnetic resonance imaging unit.

The Provincial Health Services Authority, together with Ministry of Health, invested $5.3 million into the design, construction, and deployment of these new mobile units. This is the first deployment of the mobile CT unit outside of the Lower Mainland.

It is expected to be in service outside of EKRH until Aug. 15.
