MISSING: Brenda Marion Byman

Disappeared May 7, 1961 – Wilmer, British Columbia.

On May 7, 1961, 12-year-old Brenda Marion Byman vanished without a trace near Wilmer. It’s been over six decades since she left for a hike and never came home—yet her memory still lingers, and her loved ones still hope for answers. Brenda would be 76 years old now.

Brenda had stayed overnight with a friend and went hiking the next day with four teens to nearby Lake Enid, about five km from Wilmer. The group eventually split up, and Brenda reportedly began walking back alone. Witnesses later reported hearing voices and a car door slam along the road she may have taken—but Brenda was never seen again.

What followed was one of the largest search efforts in British Columbia’s history, involving helicopters, search teams, and volunteers from surrounding areas. But no trace of Brenda was ever found. To this day, her disappearance remains a haunting mystery.

Brenda was described as a kind, quiet girl with strawberry blonde hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a parka in shades of purple, mauve, and blue with a pink hood, grey pants, blue and white oxfords, and a yellow scarf.

Her case remains unsolved. Officially classified as “missing, believed dead,” Brenda’s disappearance still divides the small town—and leaves her family with more questions than answers.

If you have any information, no matter how small, please contact the Columbia Valley RCMP at 250-342-9292 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Let’s keep Brenda’s name alive and help bring long-overdue answers to her family.
