Five evicted from Bugaboos after defying evacuation

The BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) this afternoon reported that five hikers and rock climbers were charged this week for not complying with the public safety closure of Bugaboo Provincial Park.

BC Parks implemented backcountry closures following flooding, which created hazardous conditions and led to the evacuation of dozens of people by helicopter.

On Wednesday (August 20), the COS, in collaboration with BC Parks and the RCMP, flew into the closed area via helicopter after reports of several individuals refusing to leave.

All five people – from Ontario and B.C. – were charged under the Park Act and issued eviction notices to immediately depart, which they did.

The COS and BC Parks would like to remind the public that such closures are in place to ensure public safety and enforcement action will be taken as necessary.
