Fire in Kimberley Platzl

The Kimberley Fire Department is currently on the scene of a structure fire in Kimberley’s Platzl.

The fire, which was reported at 5:47 p.m., Dec 28, is contained to the Kootenay Cycle Works building.

Eighteen firefighters are on scene and are expected to be there for most of the night to ensure there are no flare-ups. The brick structure is still standing but the inside has been totally gutted. The neighboring building, The Gilded Goat has only sustained smoke and water damage at this time.

Kimberley RCMP was called to assist with the evacuation of nearby businesses and restaurants. At this stage they are doing traffic and crowd control.

No injuries have been reported although an ambulance is on standby. Police and fire ask people to stay clear of the Platzl area. There is heavy smoke, which is a major health risk.

Police and fire officials have spoken to the owner, who was present when the fire broke out, but at this time it remains under investigation.
