Slope remediation on NorthStar Rails-to-Trails complete
The Cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley are pleased to announce the successful completion of slope remediation work along the NorthStar Rails-to-Trails, thanks to the generous support of the Regional District of East Kootenay and a significant grant from the Trans Canada Trail.
The project, which started in early August 2025, focused on rock scaling and slope stabilization along a 300-metre section of the trail located north of the St. Mary River crossing and upslope of Wycliffe Store Road.
These improvements undertaken by Alpine Solutions’ rope access crew (pictured above) ensures both the safety of trail users and the long-term stability of this well-loved regional amenity.
The project was initially estimated to cost $184,000. The cities are pleased to report that the work was successfully completed on time and approximately $40,000 under budget.
Historically, the rock slopes in this area were stabilized through rock bolting and removal by CP Rail during the years when trains served the Sullivan Mine. Recognizing the importance of ongoing safety and maintenance, the cities of Cranbrook and Kimberley undertook a thorough assessment of the slope, which identified priority areas requiring remediation.
