New childcare facility added to capital plan
City of Cranbrook council Monday night (Oct. 6) authorized amendment of the city’s Five-Year Financial Plan for the Childcare New Spaces Fund Grant and to add a recently announced childcare facility project to the capital plan.
The B.C. government and the Government of Canada Sept. 19 awarded the city $13.5 million for the full cost of design and construction of the new 123-space facility next to Western Financial Place.
Council updated the 2025–2029 Five-Year Financial Plan to include new provincial grant funding and capital projects. The proposed amendment would increase provincial grant revenue by $5.42 million in 2025, $6.77 million in 2026, and $1.36 million in 2028.
With this funding, council would add new childcare facility projects to the capital plan in each of those years, matching the value of the provincial grants received.
The grant will be paid out in three installments: 5,420,875 received in 2025; $6,776,093 – October 1, 2026;$1,355,219 – January 2, 2028.
Construction is expected to commence in the spring of 2026 with an anticipated opening date early 2028.
