We all rely on each other for safe winter driving

By Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting

From the moment you get into your vehicle to the moment you arrive at your destination, you have to trust that other drivers have safety in mind.

Whether it be using good winter tires, adjusting speed based on conditions, or turning on your headlights and taillights, there is an understanding and hope that other drivers have the same priorities as you.

Mainroad crews rely on this too. When our crews are out brining or plowing, we rely on the travelling public to give us room to work. An accident with our equipment means one less plow on the roads. And that means it takes longer to clear snow.

We have families, and we want them to get home safe too. Maintaining the highways is more than just a job to us. Give us your patience when our equipment is in front of you.

Real people are behind the wheel. Road work doesn’t end when temperatures drop. Watch out for cones, flashing lights, and maintenance vehicles.

Safety starts and ends with all of us.

“Conditions can change in a matter of moments. Slowing down and taking a few extra minutes to drive could save you from potential accidents. Drive with caution and look out for crews,” said Teagan Burton, General Manager, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting.

In response to a high frequency of questions from the public during winter operations, Mainroad maintains an online FAQ which offers helpful resources.

Our Call Centre operation is available 24/7 to report changing road conditions and debris. Please call toll free at 1-800-665-4929, and an operator will record and forward the information to crews on shift, dispatch additional personnel, and update DriveBC.
