Purcell Hockey Academy back from successful Vermont trip

Girls’ 16U and 19U teams were participating in the 2025 Fall Foliage Classic

It’s that time of year again!  Last year, the newly formed Purcell Hockey Academy (PHA) attended the Fall Foliage Classic in Burlington, Vermont for the first time with its one and only team of 19U girls.  PHA won the 19U Tier 1 division and never looked back, putting together an exceptional season of hockey that led to the expansion of the academy for the 2025-26 school year.

Fast forward to last week and PHA returned to Burlington, this time with two teams:  its 16U Female Super League (FSL) team competing in the tournament’s 17U division, and its 19U independent team competing in the 19U division.  Both teams performed well with the 16U team emerging with the 17U tournament championship and the 19U team finishing third in their division.

PHA 16U began the tournament with a tough lost, falling 2-0 to Rice Prep’s 17U team.  They were up against another older team in their next match-up, losing 5-2 to Ontario Hockey Academy’s U20 Varsity team.

Malgorzata Zakrzewska led the way for PHA, scoring both of the team’s goals, with assists going to Carlota Castellanos and Yaann Yuen.

16U teammates Freya Ekberg from Denmark and Isabella Ferrarelli from Baynes Lake.

In the team’s final preliminary-round game, PHA’s 16U team go to play against a team that was their same age, defeating Boston Hockey Academy 16U by a score of 4-1.

Goals went to Malgorzata Zakrzewska, Isabella Ferrarelli, Greta Konradova and Yaann Yuen who netted a highlight-reel marker that has since been viewed over 13,000 times on PHA’s Instagram account.  Assists were tallied by Malgorzata Zakrzewska, Anastasia Nesterenko, Freya Ekberg, and Amy Leimgruber.  Grace Kells had a solid game in net to earn the win.

The 17U division championship final was a rematch between PHA 16U and Rice Prep 17U and this time PHA emerged victorious in a 2-0 victory.  Greta Konradova and Carlota Castellanos scored for PHA with Justyna Koszyk registering the shutout in a stellar performance between the pipes.

In the 19U division, PHA opened the tournament on a winning note, defeating Boston Hockey Academy 19U 6-0 with Kennah Brant earning the shutout.  Johanna Meissner and Antea Paroubkova led the way for PHA with two goals each.  Ruby Dziuba and Willow Rohweder added singles.  Assists were tallied by Jordyn Miller, Anna McKee, and Alma Ameigeiras.

Next up for PHA 19U was Rice Prep’s 19U team.  PHA lost a closely-contested affair 4-2.  Johanna Meissner and Vera Stastkova scored for PHA with assists going to Justine Kruhlak, Ruby Dziuba, and Breeanna Longley.  Jadeyn Leung played well in goal, keeping PHA close throughout the game.

PHA 19U next played Ontario Hockey Academy’s U20 Varsity team, falling 3-2 in a nail-biter.  Anna McKee had a standout game scoring twice for PHA on two unassisted markers.

The bronze medal final was a rematch as PHA 19U played Boston Hockey Academy 19U with PHA once again emerging victorious, claiming third place for the tournament with a decisive 6-2 victory.  Scoring for PHA were Flora Pasztor, Anna McKee, Johanna Meissner, Alejandra Radcliffe, Aneta Paroubkova, and Willow Rohweder.  Assists went to Justine Kruhlak, Johanna Meissner, Anna McKee, and Hannah Dickinson.
