Carney and Eby lose battle with Trump

Perceptions by Gerry Warner

Op-Ed Commentary

What were they thinking?

Only Prime Minister Mark Carney and B.C. Premier David Eby know for sure, but their support for an apology to President Donald Trump over a political advertisement he didn’t like deeply shamed Canada and put all of us in danger of losing our precious citizenship to Uncle Sam. If you don’t believe me or dismiss what I have to say keep reading because the Great White North is facing a political apocalypse.

And so is the free world for that matter.

Remember little more than 10 months ago when the bizarre news erupted that part of Trump’s hostile agenda was to force Canada into becoming an American state? Initially most of us laughed, including yours truly, who thought Trump was just joking in his usual demented way. Less than a week later, I stopped laughing and so did millions of other Canadians when he kept doubling-down on his menacing assertion.

Indeed, he’s still doing it now along with ordering the demolition of the historic White House East Wing which he did without even bothering to get permission. Trump is so feared south of the 49th parallel that he can order the demolition of the historic White House East Wing and no one even blinks.

Pretty scary don’t you think?

The MAGA Man has power to burn and he could use it someday to erase the border between Canada and the US? Keep in mind, we have lots of natural resources in the Great White North and Trump covets all of them and he will get them some day if we don’t break our apology habit.

The great irony of this tawdry affair is that Trump blew a gasket over an Ontario advertisement pointing out that former US President Ronald Reagan was against trade tariffs because they reduced trade instead of boosting it.

In a White House interview he said, “Over the long run, such trade barriers hurt every American worker and consumer.” This spoken by the most beloved conservative president in American history cut Trump to his core because Reagan is his political hero and he couldn’t abide being contradicted by him.

In a rage, he then announced he was boosting all of Canada’s trade tariffs by a whopping 10% and stomped out of the Oval Office to play a round of golf. Or so it was said.

So, both Carney and Eby caved in to Trump’s demands. Carney by outrightly ordering cancellation of the infamous Ontario ad campaign and Eby by backing away from his announced plans to run an ad campaign like Ontario’s.

Doesn’t that make you proud to be a Canadian? Is Canada ever going to get anywhere with courageous political leaders like this?

I doubt it.
