Obituary of Janet Ann Backman

Janet Ann Backman (Bigelow)

April 23, 1938 – October 6, 2025
With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Mrs. Janet Ann Backman of Kimberley, British Columbia. Jan passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 87, at The Pines – Kimberley Special Care Home.

Born on April 23, 1938, in the small farming community of Tisdale, Saskatchewan, Jan was known for her infectious smile, positive disposition, and impeccable sense of style—always seen in her signature color-coordinated outfits. Her selfless, caring nature endeared her to all who knew her.

Jan had a deep love for gardening, walking her dogs, skiing, playing cards, and hosting dinner parties for family and friends. Her warmth and generosity touched many lives.

She received her education at the University of Saskatchewan and went on to become a certified X-ray technician. After moving to Kimberley in 1963, she worked in the local health care system until her retirement, dedicating her professional life to the well-being of the community. In addition to her career, Jan was an active fundraiser for the Kimberley Health Care System, working tirelessly with the women of the Eastern Star Lodge.

Jan was predeceased by her parents, Oscar and Winnifred “Winnie” Bigelow of Carrot River, Saskatchewan, and by her beloved husband of 28 years, Dr. Keith Backman.

She is lovingly remembered by her sister Mary Lyl McPhail (Al) of Calgary, Alberta; her two sons, Charlie Passmore of Nanaimo, BC, and his daughter Kassandra Passmore of Port Alberni, BC, and Scott Passmore (Patti) of Kimberley, BC; and her stepchildren, Mark Backman (Elana) of Powell River, BC, and Michelle Weintz (Rolpf) of Kelowna, BC.
She also leaves behind her cherished step-grandchildren: Jolene, Charlene (Patti), Geoffrey, Corey, and Taylor, as well as three great-grandchildren (Mark).

Jan will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

There will be a small family gathering to inter Jan at the Kimberley cemetery at a later date.
