Expect snowfall over Christmas region-wide
Heavy snowfall has occurred throughout the East Kootenay overnight and more is on the way.
In an alert to stakeholders, Mainroad East Kootenay Contracting is alerting regional residents to expect snowfall accumulations from today (Dec. 24) until Boxing Day.
Elk Valley: It is currently snowing in the Elk Valley and will continue lightly throughout the day. Christmas Day snowfall accumulations are forecasted to be up to five cm, and on Boxing Day snowfall is expected to increase with accumulations of up to 15 cm.
Cranbrook/Kimberley: Heavy snowfall occurred overnight resulting in up to five cm or more in some areas. The snowfall was wet and heavy. Light snowfall is expected this afternoon, which may turn into freezing rain this evening. Christmas and Boxing Day is forecasted with a rain/snow mix.
Columbia Valley: Light snowfall currently, expected to taper off this evening. Christmas Day is forecasted to have up to three cm of light snowfall, and up to five cm of snowfall for Boxing Day.
Yahk: Currently it’s raining with heavier snow by Moyie. Temperatures will rise today and continue with rainfall, temperatures will drop tonight with freezing rain expected. Christmas and Boxing Day is also forecasted to have a rain/snow mix, with temperatures dropping drastically in the evening of Dec 26.
