The importance of self-sacrifice
Letter to the Editor
Today, people in B.C. and around the world are celebrating Easter.
Easter Sunday is the most important day on the Christian liturgical calendar.
Easter is the last day in a long season of Christian observances stretching from Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, through the 40-day fast of Lent, to Holy Thursday and Good Friday.
For Christians, Easter marks the day that their Saviour, Jesus Christ, was resurrected, making this an important holiday about the triumph of life over death, and key values in Christianity: the ultimate power of love, and the importance of self-sacrifice, putting others first, ahead of ourselves.
Easter is also widely celebrated as a civic holiday and an opportunity for people to get together with friends and family to eat good food with good company.
Many families and communities also celebrate by hiding chocolate eggs and other treats for children to find on Easter morning, making this a popular holiday for kids.
To all those who are celebrating, happy Easter!”
