Rural health focus of AKBLG conference in Trail
The state of rural health in the region was a key focus of last weekend’s Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Government (AKBLG) conference held in Trail.
Councillor Lynnette Wray and Councillor Wayne Stetski attended on behalf of the City of Cranbrook, along with many elected leaders from across the Kootenays. At the AGM, Councillor Wray was elected to the AKBLG Board to represent Cranbrook and support advocacy efforts on behalf of the region.

Josie Osborne, B.C.’s Minister of Health, and Sylvia Weir, CEO of the Interior Health Authority (IHA) who were both part of the weekend conference, highlighted during their session that they are very aware of the specific issues and challenges faced in the Kootenays around health care. They also spoke to the reinvigorated relationship with hospital care in Alberta, specifically in Calgary. Issues around homelessness and community safety were also key topics at the conference.
The AKBLG represents municipalities and electoral areas across southeastern British Columbia, including the regional districts of Kootenay Boundary, Central Kootenay, and East Kootenay, along with the Town of Golden and the Village of Valemount.
The Association works to identify shared regional issues and advocate for long-term solutions that support the economic, environmental, and social well-being of residents throughout the region.
