Prescribed burn expected to start in KNP

As early as today (May 12), Parks Canada fire specialists will commence small scale guard burning in the Mitchell Ridge II prescribed fire unit, Kootenay National Park (KNP) reported today.

The burn location is in the south end of Kootenay National Park, near Highway 93 and Settlers Road, approximately 16.5 km east of Radium Hot Springs.

Guard burning helps strengthen fire control lines and supports safe, effective prescribed fire operations. If conditions allow, crews may proceed directly into igniting the prescribed fire; otherwise, prescribed fire ignition will occur later.

Guard burning will be visible from Highway 93 and Settlers Road. You will see: Flames and smoke; Helicopters; Fire crews and equipment.

All part of normal prescribed fire operations.
