Regional rain alert stretches to Tuesday
Environment Canada issued another special weather statement this morning (June 1), warning of a long duration of moderate to heavy rain throughout the East Kootenay stretching from now until Tuesday morning (June 2).
Total rainfall amounts of 40 to 80 mm can be expected with Yoho National Park, Kootenay National Park, East Kootenay, and Elk Valley highlighted in Environment Canada’s statement.
“A potent Alberta low pressure system continues to bring moderate rain to southeastern B.C. today and tonight. The rain is expected to ease on Tuesday morning. Snow levels will decrease to as low as 1,600 metres over Yoho Park – Kootenay Park region early this morning, so travellers and recreationalists are advised of winter conditions over higher elevations,” Environment Canada said.

Total rainfall amounts will vary greatly across southeastern B.C. Highest rainfall amounts near 60 to 80 mm are possible over north- and east-facing slopes as well as communities and highways closest to the Alberta border.
Up to 40 mm of rainfall is possible for areas further west.
There is an elevated risk of flooding, landslides and washouts from heavy rain, and rain on snow in the mountains.
Please continue to monitor your local forecast throughout the event. The B.C. River Forecast Centre provides information on current streamflow conditions and flooding alerts. Check DriveBC for road conditions.
