Obituary of Smartryk NAUDE

Smartryk “Vic” NAUDE

September 11, 1946 ~ June 29, 2026 (age 79)

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Vic announces his passing. He quietly passed away on Monday June 29th at Rocky Mountain Village with his children by his side. Vic was born September 11th, 1946, in Pretoria, South Africa, where he grew up with his parents and 4 other siblings.  In his early years he became a surveyor for the Rhodesian Army where he surveyed many of the roads for the country, receiving special recognition by the Prime Minister for his work.

Vic then met his wife Jean backpacking around Europe in the early 70’s and emigrated to Canada (Vernon, BC) to start a family in 1976 where they had three children, Elize, Dirk and Hendrik. They finally settled in Fernie in 1988 when he got a job as a surveyor at Byron Creek Collieries until the mine shut its doors. He spent the rest of his career working as an environmentalist at Greenhill’s Mine until he retired in September of 2012.

Anyone who was blessed to know Vic, would remember his kindness, care for others, his extreme dedication to his family and anyone he loved. He taught his children to never back down, to fight for what was right and to know that nothing was out of reach if you put your mind to it.

He will be greatly missed by all that knew and loved him. He is predeceased by his mother, father and older brother and sister. He is survived by his ex-wife Jean, 3 children (Elize, Dirk and Hendrik), 6 grandchildren (Emmalynn, Madilynn, Laeighton, Addison, Charlize and Tyson) and his younger brother and sister (Jacobus and Elize).

In lieu of flowers, please give donations to the Parkinsons Society of BC. His memorial service will be held at the Baptist Church on July 11th.
