Two killed in Kootenay National Park MVI
Columbia Valley RCMP is investigating a fatal motor vehicle incident (MVI) that occurred on Highway 93 in Kootenay National Park on Wednesday, July 8.
At approximately 5:36 p.m., police were notified of a serious motor vehicle incident near Simpson Monument on Highway 93.
Columbia Valley RCMP members, BC Highway Patrol and a RCMP Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene along with BC Emergency Health Services, local fire and rescue personnel, and STARS Air Ambulance.
The initial investigation determined that a westbound vehicle crossed the centre line while negotiating a corner and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle at highway speed.
Both vehicles were occupied only by their drivers, who were pronounced deceased at the scene.
A third vehicle was involved in the incident but only peripherally. The two occupants of that vehicle are believed to have sustained minor injuries.
“This was a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of two lives,” said Cpl. Brett Urano, RCMP spokesperson. “Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the deceased as they navigate this difficult time.”
The BC Coroners Service was notified and attended the scene. Highway 93 remained closed while emergency crews and investigators processed the scene and was reopened at approximately 1:05 a.m. on July 9.
The investigation remains ongoing; however, no criminality is suspected at this time.
