Evacuation Alert rescinded for Lussier River Wildfire

The Evacuation Alert for the Lussier River Wildfire has been rescinded as the BC Wildfire Service continues to gain the upper hand on the fire.

“The BC Wildfire Service has now classified the fire as Being Held and has recommended that it is safe to rescind the Evacuation Alert. From those on the ground, to those in the air, and all those working behind the scenes coordinating firefighting efforts or supporting the people affected by the Alert, thank you for your tireless efforts since Saturday,” said Loree Duczek, Regional Emergency Operations Centre Information Officer.

The Evacuation Alert has been in effect since July 11. A copy of the Rescind and associated map can be found on the Evacuation Alerts and Orders page on www.rdek.bc.ca.

While the fire is classified as Being Held, it remains active so residents and visitors in the area may still see smoke as BC Wildfire Service crews continue working on it.

Given current conditions, it is expected to remain within the current perimeter, control line or boundary. The latest updates on the Lussier River Wildfire, other wildfires in BC and current fire prohibitions can be found on www.bcwildfire.ca.

The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is reminding all residents in the East Kootenay to register for the Regional Evacuation Notification System and for those who’ve already done so, to login and check that they have placed their location pin correctly.

“We have found that many people have just used a postal code when registering or have dropped their pin in a general area. It is vital that pins be placed directly on your intended property, or you risk missing out on critical alerts or being alerted incorrectly,” added Duczek.

To register, visit www.rdek.bc.ca or call 250-426-2188 or 1-855-346-2188.
