Obituary of Michael James Wheaton
Michael James Wheaton
October 24, 1946 – July 8, 2026
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Michael James Wheaton on July 8, 2026, at the age of 79.
Michael was an avid baseball and hockey player who carried his love of sports throughout his life. He devoted more than 30 years to teaching and was a much-loved and respected educator in Australia, Fernie, and Cranbrook. His kindness, patience, and dedication left a lasting impression on countless students, colleagues, and friends. Teaching was more than a career to Michael—it was a passion, and he took great pride in helping others learn and grow.
Michael leaves behind his beloved wife, Holly Wheaton; his sons, Mackenzie Wheaton and Timothy Wheaton; his daughter-in-law, Lorel Wheaton of Scotland; Lorel’s parents, Lourdes and Butch of Cranbrook; and his loving sister, Cindy Brown of Calgary, Alberta.
He was predeceased by his parents, Murray Wheaton, who worked at the Cranbrook Townsman, and Florence Wheaton, both of Cranbrook.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Chang, Dr. Brown, Dr. Yue, and the wonderful staff at Joseph Creek Care Village for the compassionate care and support they provided to Michael.
In keeping with Michael’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Huntington Society of Canada or to a charity of your choice.
