Victoria filmmaker Simon Rasmussen’s short film “The Ballad of Sloth Shot,” partly filmed in Invermere, is now on YouTube after an award-winning run on the film festival circuit.

The science fiction/western film tells the story of sharp-shooting cowgirl Jane Kershaw (Angie Miller), whose quiet life is shattered when an injured time traveller collapses in her barn. Struggling to help him, she finds herself alone against a villain from the future intent on destroying her town.

Filmed in Invermere and Victoria, “The Ballad of Sloth Shot” played in four Canadian film festivals and won awards at two Toronto festivals: Best Comedy Film at the Wildsound Film and Screenplay Festival, and Best Story at the Fantasy/Sci-Fi Film Festival.

Scenic shots from Wilmer and the Toby Hill Road lookout will be recognizable to local viewers, and drone footage over downtown Invermere features prominently during the climactic scene where the main character faces off against the time-travelling villain.

“I have the good fortune to spend part of every summer in Invermere, and the backdrop of mountains, fields and horses was the perfect setting, even if most of what you see is filmed just 15 minutes from the ocean,”Rasmussen said.

A graduate of the Gulf Islands Film and Television School and Camosun College’s Applied Communication Program, Simon Rasmussen’s early film work aired on TV in southern Alberta and earned a permanent spot in the City of Medicine Hat archives. He is thrilled to return to filmmaking after a 20-year detour for career and family.
