MBSS students evacuated after lock down

Update 10 a.m.:

The police incident at Mount Baker Secondary School is no longer impacting traffic in the surrounding area, and there is no risk to public safety.

Officers remain on scene and school property remains closed.

We would like to thank students, staff, parents, and members of the public for their patience, understanding, and cooperation while officers responded to the incident.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to refer to School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay) communications for information regarding students returning to school and any school-specific updates.

Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS) students and staff have been evacuated after a lockdown was initiated at the Cranbrook school this morning.

MBSS Principal Aaron Thorn shared an update email with parents that noted: “Mount Baker Secondary students and staff are being relocated from the muster point at Safeway to the gymnasium at Laurie Middle School.

“Parents and guardians may pick up students from Laurie Middle School. Students who are not picked up may remain at Laurie Middle School with staff.

“Vehicles left at Mount Baker Secondary School can be picked up at a later time.

“Thank you for your patience and cooperation,” Thorn said, adding, “Students are safe and staff is with them. Once we have more information we will share it out with families.

“Please do not come to the building for cars or possessions, the school is locked and RCMP are on site.”
