Homeowners denied access to curb-side recycle program

Letter to the Editor

The City of Cranbrook participates in the Recycle BC program by providing curb-side recycling in Cranbrook.  Most Cranbrook residents agree that the “green bin” program is an excellent and efficient way for homeowners to participate in a small practical way to do their part in being environmentally conscientious.

However, did you know that several hundred Cranbrook homeowners are denied access to this city program?  Yes, as a bare-land strata owner in Cranbrook the city denies me and hundreds of other taxpayers access to this program.

Over a year ago Councillor Wes Graham put forward a motion to the Cranbrook Mayor and council that would have allowed strata councils the opportunity to participate in the recycle program. Unfortunately, Mayor Price, Coun. Wray and others voted against this motion.  As a result, several hundred residents are excluded from this excellent recycling program.

It frustrates me that politicians preach being concerned about our environment but their actions show them to be hypocritical.

Municipal elections are around the corner so be sure to ask the candidates if they are really supportive of all citizens having an opportunity to participate in the city Recycle BC program.

Douglas McLachlan,

Cranbrook
