Meet RDEK Area E candidate Nowell Berg

By Nowell Berg

Op-Ed Commentary

As a long-time Wasa resident, I am running as a candidate for Director of Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) Electoral Area E in the up-coming RDEK election being held October 17.

I have deep roots at Wasa; my parents bought property in 1949.

I’ve been here a long time. I’ve experienced most everything Wasa and Area E has to offer. I’ve seen lots of change.

From the middle of my heart, it truly is my home.

My life philosophy is to serve community and those less fortunate than myself. Volunteering is part of what I do. Helping out is how we build community.

Nine years ago I was elected as a volunteer Trustee on the Board of the Wasa Lake Land Improvement District (WLLID). For the past three years I’ve been Board Chair. This has allowed me to engage with people, businesses and community groups.

I am a candidate because it’s a way to give back to the community and Area E. To make sure your voice is heard at the RDEK and to make sure you are aware of changes in your neighbourhood so they don’t come out of left field.

I commit to working with everyone and all groups across Area E to building relationships and partnerships, grow resilience and support business to keep jobs and families in the Area.

This election is about voting for the best candidate who can represent Area E, advocate for all residents and do the work necessary to resolve outstanding issues, especially those who face challenges whether its drinkable water, increasing sub-divisions and dwelling density, completing a regional park or pathway, large wake-boats on small lakes, highway safety or making sure development follows OCP guidelines.

No one wants excessive taxes. You should expect no less than the Area E Director to make sure increases are modest and prudently spent. I’m all for keeping the RDEK’s current debt free status.

The RDEK’s Accessory Dwelling unit program should help with allowing seniors to live in their homes longer with family support close at hand.

As Area E Director, I will advocate for the Wasa School (pictured) renewal (aka Tri-Village Community Centre). It would be a great addition to the community and would support children, families and seniors.

The Wasa and Meadowbrook OCPs are up for review next year. Residents will have opportunities to participate and provide input through public town hall meetings and online surveys.

Area E deserves a director who listens, works collaboratively and follows through on the issues that matter to our communities.

Listening. Advocating. Doing the work for you.

I’m Nowell Berg. Candidate for Director – Area E.

Please vote for Berg.

General Voting Day – Oct. 17.

Voting places at Wasa Community Hall and Centre 64 in Kimberley.

The next advance voting day is on the October 13 at Wasa Community Hall.
