Work begins transitioning in new Mayor and council
As the dust settles on the 2026 municipal election held this past weekend in Cranbrook, the work of governing now begins for the incoming Mayor and council over the next couple of weeks before they hold their very first meeting as a council in early November.
Starting on Monday, all members of council will be taking part in a week-long mandatory and comprehensive orientation program, which is designed to help them better understand their roles, their responsibilities, and duties, while introducing them to the work of each city department.
Council members will learn about foundational governance, role clarity, parliamentary procedures, planning, and public hearings. Municipal finance 101, understanding the governance structure, boards and committees, and city department presentations will round out the orientation week.
The new council is set to be sworn in and officially take their oath of office next week.
Council members will also take part in a neighbourhood visit to review specific sites in Cranbrook that will be topics for council during their term.
“I am very excited to meet the team, and to begin the important work of learning and working together,” said Mayor-elect Tom Shypitka. “For anyone who has not been involved in governance before, the learning curve is steep. Together, we will grow to best serve the residents of Cranbrook.”
The new council’s inaugural meeting is set for Monday, November 2.
