Remember to check your smoke detectors

As we approach the time of year when many people traditionally changed their clocks, the Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) is reminding residents to check their smoke detectors.

The RDEK, including municipalities, will no longer be changing clocks and will remain on the current time year-round. As a result, the familiar “change your clocks, check your batteries” reminder may no longer serve as a seasonal prompt.

Please take a few minutes to test every smoke alarm in your home and replace batteries where needed.

Smoke alarms save lives. To help keep your household protected:

  • Test each smoke alarm using its test button.
  • Replace batteries if your alarm uses removable batteries.
  • Check that alarms are installed in appropriate locations and are not blocked, painted over, or damaged.
  • Replace smoke alarms that are expired or not working properly, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Choose a date that works for your household and make smoke-alarm testing part of your regular home-safety routine.
