Garden shed arsonist turns self into police

Cranbrook RCMP have arrested a Cranbrook man for arson and mischief after he turned himself in after lighting a garden shed ablaze March 14.

At 5:52 a.m. on March 14, Cranbrook RCMP responded to a complaint of of a prowler in the 1800 block of 6th St S, who was slashing vehicle tires.

Upon police attendance the officers heard a ‘whomp’ sound as they entered a back yard and immediately saw a wooden garden shed on fire. The officers acted quickly to evacuate the residence and a neighboring residence then used a garden hose to keep the adjoining residence cool and slow the fire’s spread, while they called the Cranbrook Fire Department, who arrived very quickly and extinguished the flames.

The quick action by RCMP members likely prevented further damage to neighbouring structures. The damage was limited to the garden shed with some damage to the adjoining residence.

Shortly after 7 a.m., members of the Cranbrook RCMP arrested a 23-year-old male after he had called police to turn himself in.

A bail hearing was held March 15 where the suspect faced charges including arson and mischief.
