Keep your wireless Internet secure: police urge

On July 25, Kimberley RCMP learned person(s) unknown had fraudulently used a resident’s credit card in order to purchase items by mail order.

The items purchased are used to take advantage of insecure wireless Internet connections and / or devices that automatically connect to unknown WiFi connections. It is believed they would exploit these networks / devices to obtain more banking and credit card information.

Through vigilance on the cardholder’s part these items never reached the intended destination. However, police believe the person(s) may obtain these items in the future.

Residents are reminded to keep their wireless Internet secure and only connect to networks known to them. Check credit card statements regularly to ensure the cardholder authorized all charges.

If you or anyone you know has any information regarding this incident, please contact the Kimberley RCMP at (250) 427-4811 or call Crimestoppers at: 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
