35th annual Griz Days ready to roll
Fifty years of skiing in Fernie is the theme for this year’s Griz Days Festival in Fernie.
The fun kicked off this morning (Friday, March 2) with a story time session at the Fernie Heritage Library for toddlers and the festivities really get rolling this evening at 6 p.m. when the CP Station Square Street Party gets underway.
Running until 10 p.m., the evening’s fun includes live entertainment, a beer garden and concessions.
Saturday morning (March 3) launches the heaviest day of the weekend festival, beginning with an 8 a.m. pancake breakfast at the Community Centre. Entrance is by donation to the Fernie Christian Youth Association.
Running throughout the day is the ‘Extreme Griz Competition,’ with the best dressed griz and pancake eating contest at the community centre, while there is an axe throwing competition at Fernie Alpine Resort, along with other events at the ski hill, as well as an arm wrestling competition at The Fernie Hotel, which is also hosting an all-day pig roast.
Noon hour features the start of three events, including the Baby Griz Crawl at the community centre, a street hockey tourney at Park Place Lodge (complete with a beer garden) and ‘Human Foosball,’ at El Guapo (call 250-423-9234 for more).
The Fernie Hotel is also hosting karaoke from 2 to 5 p.m.
Almost 40 floats are confirmed for the annual Griz Parade, which gets underway at 6:30 p.m. The Cranbrook Bugle Band leads the procession, which precedes the 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. CP Station Square Street Party. Along with the beer garden and concessions, the evening’s fun features a host of family fun, including live entertainment, the Creative Energy Arts Factory, PT the Clown, the crowning of the Extreme Griz, mid-evening fireworks and the finals of the Commit Rail Jams.
On Sunday, the Fernie Snowmobile Association is hosting a poker run and family ride, starting at the Coal Creek staging area (go to: www.ferniesnowmobile.com for more).
At 1 p.m. at Fernie Alpine Resort is the hilarious Elk Dummy Downhill Race and at 2 p.m. is a Euchre Tournament at The Fernie Hotel.
