New council for Shuswap Band
Shuswap First Nation residents elected a new band council yesterday (Nov. 7).

Incumbent Coun. Barb Coté, who sounded the alarm on excessive band spending in recent weeks, emerged as the only member of the Shuswap council to hold her seat.
Unofficial numbers have Coté capturing 72 votes, while Tim Eugene (55 votes) and Rosalita Pascal (52 votes) round out the election victors.
Chief Paul Sam, 80, who held the reins to the Shuswap Band from 1980 to 2002 and 2003 to 2014 received the fewest votes in the election (34) while Coun. Alice Sam, his former wife, received 48 votes.
The three elected councillors will vote on the chief position in an upcoming meeting.
