Obituary for Dennis Felton Burns

Dennis Felton BURNS

May 22, 1932 – January 6, 2016

Dennis was born May 22 1932, in Saint John , New Brunswick , where he spent 35 years learning to hate cereal and beans. He was told from a young age that he would never be able to walk having been diagnosed with tuberculosis . He was always a stubborn man though , and in his late 30s he learned to walk , right out of the care unit where he spent so many years . In years to follow , Dennis spent most of his time travelling the states and Canada where he learned the art of gambling and a passion for cooking . He met many friendly faces along the way. He spent quite some time in Vancouver writing a novel , “the burnt spoon ” , it was five large coil books long . It was very impressive for a man with little education , and Dennis was very proud of his work. He was most often known for telling stories of his travels in life , some you would hear many times . He was also quite a joker. You knew never to use the word “gross ” around Dennis or it would be followed by the joke ; “gross? You know what’s gross? When your carving into a rump roast and it farts ! That’s gross! .” In his years of travels Dennis never quite found a place to call home before moving to Sparwood. Though he moved out of the small town many times , he was always led back , often seen wandering town in the middle of summer with his lucky hat and big heavy parka , and only his big yellow suitcase in tow. Dennis didn’t have to have a lot in life to be happy , a few lucky draws on his keno tickets , a tv and plenty of movies to watch was enough for him. Even in the ladder years he remained a familiar face in the community , a kind hearted gambler who still enjoyed travelling , even when his legs would only get him to the end of the block. Everyone in town knew Dennis , or even just the face . He will be remembered by our small community , and those who know his story , will forever be inspired. It is not what life throws at you that will limit what you can accomplish , but what you do with the gifts you are given to make yourself limitless . Today we say not goodbye , but “see you later when your hair is straighter ” , because Dennis would want it that way.
