Canal Flats receives Crown land for park

The Village of Canal Flats will soon have a new park for residents to enjoy, thanks to a Crown land grant from the province through the Sponsored Crown Grant Program, announced Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong.

The park, to be located at the northwest intersection of Burns Avenue and Grainger Road, will feature trees, pathways, grassed areas and benches.

The village purchased Lots 1 and 2 of the proposed park in late 2005, and the province’s grant of land for the adjacent Lots 3 and 4 are integral to Canal Flats’ expansion plans for the park.

The Sponsored Crown Grant Program allows the Province to support communities in their efforts to address green priorities, enhance economic development and improve safety.

“I am so pleased to receive this Crown grant of land in support of Canal Flats. The land’s central location makes it an ideal spot for residents to take advantage of the park’s facilities. It will be great for people to be able to use this park as way to build and maintain a sense of community,” stated Canal Flats’ Mayor Ute Juras.

“The province is committed to supporting local governments in their efforts to develop more green spaces and recreation amenities for B.C. families to enjoy. Parks encourage people to get out, enjoy the fresh air, take walks or go for a picnic – all activities that contribute to a healthier lifestyle,” said Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.

“I remember well when Canal Flats was incorporated. My congratulations to Mayor (Ute) Juras for all the good things that are happening under her leadership, and my thanks to Minister Chong for always remembering the East Kootenay. This is great news for a great little town,” said Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett.

The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development has yearly allocations to sponsor Crown grants or nominal rent tenures for local governments and community organizations.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations manages the land transfer process, once a sponsoring ministry agrees to sponsor a grant of Crown land.

The value of the land for this project has been assessed at $80,000.

Ed. Note: If you are thinking you have seen this story before, you are correct. After submitting the press release the province came back a couple of days later and asked for it to be removed due to concerns about some of the information. The province re-submitted the release on June 1.
